Why Should You Get Your Air Ducts Cleaned?

Answer: Because your air ducts get dirty.

In the course of regular use, dust, dirt, and even mold and mildew tend to build up in air duct systems. Just like you vacuum your carpet or wipe down your counter-tops, air ducts also need to be cleaned when they get dirty.

In addition to these normal build-ups found in all homes, there are several other factors that can increase the need for home air duct cleaning:

Obviously, some people in your home will be more sensitive to these contaminants than others. Persons that suffer from allergies and asthma require a much higher degree of air quality than others. Also, young children and the elderly are often more susceptible to the types of poor indoor air quality and indoor air pollution that air duct cleaning can help to address and correct.

    Inspect Your Air Ducts

You can tell if your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system needs cleaning by one of two ways. First, with a screwdriver, remove a floor or wall register. Then,

Inspect Air Duct With Flash LightUse a small mirror and flashlight to examine the interior of the air duct for signs of dirt, debris, dust, mold, etc.
    -- OR --
Inspect Air Duct With CameraUse a digital camera and take a picture inside the air duct. The picture should show if any contaminants have built up in your air duct system.

In either case, if there is visibile dust, dirt, debris, mold, pollen, etc., then you should probably have your air ducts cleaned. The presence of mold is especially problematic, and should only be dealt with by a certified mold remediation specialist.

What You Should Know About Air Duct Cleaning

Air duct cleaning is not an accurate description of what is being done be NADCA certified air duct technicians. The entire HVAC system is being cleaned. Failure to clean all components of the system can result in re-contamination of the entire system, thus minimizing the benefits of cleaning. Make sure that your air duct cleaner is certified by NADCA and cleaning your entire air duct system.

For the same reason that you would not only clean half of your kitchen counter, or only vacuum half of the carpet, you also would not want to clean only part of your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. NADCA recommends cleaning the entire HVAC system, including the following components:

    • Air ducts
    • Coils
    • Drain pan
    • Registers
    • Grills
    • Air plenum
    • Blower motor and assembly
    • Heat exchanger
